Deadly Las Vegas Crash: Why Was She Still Behind the Wheel?
Another devastating crash has shaken Las Vegas — but what has people talking is what police say they discovered afterward.
According to investigators, a 21-year-old woman is accused of driving impaired and at an extremely high rate of speed when her Ford Mustang slammed into a pickup truck during an early morning collision in Las Vegas over Memorial Day weekend. Police say the impact was so violent that 49-year-old Juan Santana-Savalza, a husband and father on his way to work, was killed at the scene. Another passenger suffered critical injuries.
But the story became even more disturbing when an arrest report revealed the driver allegedly had a previous vehicular manslaughter charge connected to a 2023 incident. Investigators also reportedly found an open bottle of tequila inside the vehicle, while the car’s speedometer was allegedly frozen between 95 and 100 mph in a 35 mph zone after the crash.
Now families across Southern Nevada are asking difficult questions.
How does someone previously connected to a vehicular manslaughter case end up accused in another deadly crash? Are repeat offenders receiving enough oversight? Are Nevada’s DUI laws strong enough to prevent tragedies before they happen? And why does it feel like Las Vegas continues to see one horrific high-speed crash after another?
The loss of one life has left an entire family shattered. The debate that follows could impact every driver on Nevada roads.
